Feb 6th: Pray for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Special prayers at a special time for a special lady!

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. (1 Timothy 2:1-2 NIV)

During 2022, there will be year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world, as communities come together to celebrate The Queen’s historic reign. On 6th February, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

She started her reign with a request for prayer: In my first Christmas broadcast in 1952, I asked the people of the Commonwealth and Empire to pray for me as I prepared to dedicate myself to their service at my Coronation.  I have been – and remain – very grateful to you for your prayers and to God for His steadfast love. I have indeed seen His faithfulness.”[1]

In 1992, in her Guildhall speech in the City of London when she referred to that ‘Annus Horribilis’ year, she went on to express gratitude for the support of the prayers of others: “You my Lord Mayor, and all those whose prayers – fervent, I hope, but not too frequent – have sustained me through all these years, are friends indeed. Prince Philip and I give you all, wherever you may be, our most humble thanks”[2]

In 1952, she requested: “Pray that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life’.[3]

Let us continue to pray for wisdom and strength for Her Majesty, giving thanks for her life of witness and service and use the blessing from Numbers 6:24-26 on February 6th as Her Majesty begins this Platinum Jubilee year.

“The Lord bless you and keep you;

   the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you;

   the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”
