The World Cup: Join the Global Prayer Movement

This Thursday, the world’s attention turns to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Billions of people will be watching. Millions will travel. Nations will gather. Cities will come alive with celebration, passion, and expectation.

For many, the World Cup is simply about football.

For Christians, it is also an extraordinary opportunity for prayer.

Throughout Scripture, God calls His people to pray for the nations. Events like the World Cup bring together people from every tribe, language, and culture in a way few other occasions can. What if, while the world watches football, the Church mobilises in prayer for revival, salvation, justice, and transformation?

A Strategic Moment for the Gospel

The World Cup is more than a sporting event. It is a global gathering of people and cultures. With matches taking place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, millions will travel through host cities while billions engage through television, social media, and digital platforms.

This creates a unique moment to pray for:

  • Revival in participating nations
  • Open doors for the Gospel
  • Unity among churches
  • Protection and safety for host cities
  • Salvation among fans and visitors
  • Christian athletes to shine as witnesses for Christ
  • Freedom and justice for those vulnerable to exploitation and human trafficking

As Psalm 2:8 reminds us:

“Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance.”

Five Ways You Can Pray During the Tournament

1. Pray for the Nations

Every team represents a nation loved by God.

Why not adopt a nation and pray for it throughout the tournament? Pray for spiritual awakening, wise leadership, church growth, and opportunities for people to encounter Jesus.

2. Pray for the Host Cities

Thousands of visitors will flood into cities across North America.

Pray for protection, peace, hospitality teams, volunteers, churches, and ministries serving during the tournament. Ask God to create divine appointments between believers and those searching for hope.

3. Pray for Fans

Football often brings people together around a shared passion, but many are also searching for purpose, meaning, and belonging.

Pray that conversations about life and faith would happen naturally and that many would encounter the love of Christ.

As Jesus said in John 4:35:

“Lift up your eyes and look on the fields, for they are white for harvest.”

4. Pray for Players, Coaches and Officials

Many athletes carry immense pressure and influence.

Pray for their wellbeing, protection, integrity, and courage. Ask God to strengthen Christian players and coaches as they live out their faith publicly and authentically.

5. Pray Against Exploitation and Human Trafficking

Large international events can increase risks for vulnerable people.

Pray for the exposure of criminal activity, wisdom for law enforcement, protection for those at risk, and freedom for those trapped in exploitation. Pray that ministries working on the frontlines would be effective and fruitful.

Join the World Prayer Centre Prayer Movement

Over the coming weeks, World Prayer Centre will be encouraging believers across the UK and beyond to pray intentionally throughout the tournament.

You could participate by:

  • Joining our Revival Prayer Hour
  • Downloading and sharing prayer resources
  • Praying daily for the nations
  • Encouraging your church to get involved
  • Hosting prayer gatherings around key matches
  • Sharing prayer points on social media

Imagine thousands of Christians praying together as the nations gather.

Imagine churches working together in unity.

Imagine people encountering Jesus because believers chose to pray.

The Final Whistle Is Not the End

Our prayer is that the impact of this World Cup will extend far beyond the final match.

We are believing for lasting spiritual fruit, stronger prayer movements, new evangelistic opportunities, and lives transformed by the power of Jesus Christ.

As the nations gather through football, may they encounter God’s love, truth, and salvation.

The World Cup starts this Thursday.

The prayer movement can start today.
