Following a period of intense nightly Pentagon bombardments against Iranian missile facilities and severe retaliatory strikes on U.S. military bases throughout the Middle East, a pivotal moment has arrived. Over the weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump announced he had called off a massive, “World War II-level” aerial bombardment targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure at the urgent request of Gulf allies.
The critical point of contention remains the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor that has been effectively closed, crippling international shipping and threatening a severe global recession. While Washington claims a breakthrough deal on the “complete opening” and denuclearisation of Iran is imminent, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has downplayed direct U.S. talks, choosing instead to focus on separate transit negotiations with Oman. Meanwhile, military commanders inside Iran are reportedly using the temporary pauses in strikes to rebuild damaged defense systems.
