The Father’s Heart: Praying for Prodigals to Return

The Father’s Heart: Praying for Prodigals to Return

Are you praying for a child, brother, sister, relative who grew up knowing Jesus, but who ended up falling away from faith? It is important to keep praying for prodigals to come home.

prodigals

They say that for every Christian there are three prodigals.  Imagine what would happen if they all came back home to God.  This was the focus of our Revival Prayer Hour this morning as we prayed for the Father’s love and revival in prodigals and those returning to faith.

One of the most powerful stories Jesus told is the story of the prodigal son. It is a story of rebellion, redemption, restoration, and the relentless love of a Father.

The younger son demanded his inheritance, left home, and squandered everything in reckless living. Eventually, broken and desperate, he found himself feeding pigs and longing for the food they ate. It was in this place of emptiness that he “came to his senses” and decided to return home.

What happened next reveals the very heart of God. While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him, ran to him, embraced him, and celebrated his return.

This is the heart of our Heavenly Father toward every prodigal today.

Across our nation there are many who once walked closely with Jesus but have drifted away. Some carry wounds from life. Others have been disappointed by church. Many have become distracted by success, relationships, pleasure, or simply the pressures of everyday life. Yet God has not forgotten them.

The Father is still watching. He is still calling. He is still waiting.

The story of the prodigal son reminds us that no one is beyond God’s reach. No distance is too great, no failure too severe, and no mistake too serious for His grace.

As believers, we are invited to join the Father in prayer for those who have wandered. Revival is not only about people coming to faith for the first time; it is also about sons and daughters returning home.

How to Pray

1. Pray that prodigals would come to their senses

Just as the prodigal son reached a moment of awakening, pray that the Holy Spirit would bring conviction and revelation.

“Lord, open their eyes to Your goodness and help them recognise their need for You.”

2. Pray for divine encounters

Ask God to interrupt lives with His presence through dreams, conversations, worship, Scripture, and unexpected moments of grace.

“Father, reveal Yourself in ways that cannot be ignored.”

3. Pray for healing from wounds and disappointments

Many who leave the faith do so carrying hurt, disappointment, or unresolved questions.

“Jesus, heal the wounds that have caused people to drift away and reveal Your love afresh.”

4. Pray for Christian families who are waiting

Many parents and grandparents are carrying a burden for children who have walked away from faith.

“Lord, strengthen those who are praying and help them not to lose hope.”

5. Pray for welcoming churches

The father ran toward his son rather than standing back in judgment.

“Raise up churches that reflect the Father’s heart, welcoming prodigals with grace, truth, and compassion.”

6. Pray for a movement of returning sons and daughters

Ask God for more than individual stories. Pray for a national turning back to Christ.

“Lord, bring home a generation that has wandered and awaken spiritual hunger across our nation.”

The Father is still standing at the gate. The invitation remains open. Let us pray with expectation that many prodigals will return home and discover once again the joy of the Father’s embrace.
