Watchmen on the Walls: Praying for the Protection of the UK
“I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night.” — Isaiah 62:6
There are moments when the Church is called not simply to observe what is happening around us, but to watch, discern and pray.
Across Scripture, we see the picture of the watchman — someone positioned on the walls of a city, awake and alert while others sleep. The watchman looked towards the horizon, recognised approaching danger and sounded the alarm.
Today, the Church has a spiritual watchman role. This does not mean living in fear, looking suspiciously at people or attempting to predict where something might happen. It means being spiritually awake, listening to God, understanding the times and faithfully interceding for our communities and nation.
At this present time, there is a particular need to pray for the protection of the United Kingdom.
A Time to Watch and Pray
The UK’s national terrorism threat level is currently SEVERE, meaning that an attack is considered highly likely. The threat level is set independently by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre and is kept under regular review.
For Christians, information such as this should not produce panic. Instead, it can become a prompt to prayer.
Our response is not fear, but faith; not speculation, but intercession; not hatred, but love.
The CWM Prayer’s UK Protection Prayer Strategy shared with World Prayer Centre calls Christians to raise a prayer shield over our nations, to ask the Holy Spirit to guide our prayers and to remain aware of what is happening in the news so that we can respond prayerfully.
The words of Jesus remain important:
“Watch and pray.” — Matthew 26:41
Watching and praying belong together.
What Does It Mean to Be a Watchman?
In Ezekiel 33, the watchman was given responsibility to watch and sound the trumpet when danger approached.
There is an important principle here for intercessors.
A watchman sees, listens, warns and prays.
But biblical watching is not about becoming obsessed with darkness. Our attention ultimately remains fixed upon Jesus. We recognise what is happening around us while asking, “Lord, how do You want us to pray?”
Watchmen should therefore be:
Alert — aware of what is happening locally, nationally and internationally.
Discerning — asking the Holy Spirit for wisdom rather than immediately reacting to rumours or speculation.
Prayerful — turning information into intercession.
Peace-filled — refusing to allow fear to determine our prayers.
Compassionate — remembering that God’s desire is redemption and salvation.
One of the most important principles in the UK Protection Prayer Strategy is:
Pray FOR people, never AGAINST people.
As we move around our towns and cities, we can release God’s love, grace and blessing over the places and people around us.
1. Pray for Hidden Plans to Be Exposed
Pray that any plans intended to cause violence, destruction or loss of life will be discovered before they can be carried out.
Ask God to bring what is hidden into the light.
Pray for intelligence officers, counter-terrorism teams and police investigators to make connections between pieces of information that may initially appear unrelated.
Pray for unusual breakthroughs in investigations and for people with vital information to have the courage to speak.
Prayer: Father, bring hidden things into the light. Give our police and intelligence services wisdom, discernment and timely information. May plans intended to cause harm be uncovered and prevented before they can be carried out.
2. Pray for Those Responsible for Protecting the Nation
Scripture specifically encourages Christians to pray for those in authority.
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority…” 1 Timothy 2:1–2
Pray for God’s wisdom, insight and protection over:
national and local government
police and Chief Constables
intelligence and security services
the Armed Forces
emergency services
local authorities
those responsible for transport and critical infrastructure
communications and media
community and faith leaders.
These are among the areas highlighted in the protection prayer strategy.
Pray particularly that agencies will communicate effectively and that crucial information will reach the right people at the right time.
3. Pray Over the Gates of Our Communities
Historically, watchmen stood at strategic points around the city.
We can similarly identify the “gates” and gathering places of our communities and intentionally cover them in prayer.
Consider your own town, village or city. Where do large numbers of people gather?
Pray over shopping centres, railway and bus stations, airports, schools and universities, stadiums, entertainment venues, government buildings, major roads, bridges and tunnels, workplaces, hospitals and places of worship.
The original prayer strategy encourages Christians to identify such places in their own communities and pray specifically for them.
You could even take a map of your community and mark key locations. Churches and prayer groups could divide these areas between them and regularly pray over them.
4. Pray Against Fear, Hatred and Division
Terrorism seeks to do more than cause physical destruction. It can generate fear, suspicion, hatred and division.
The Church must model another way.
Scripture tells us:
“Perfect love drives out fear.” — 1 John 4:18
Pray that fear will not grip our communities.
Pray against hatred towards people because of their ethnicity, nationality, religion or background.
Pray for protection particularly for communities that may become targets of hatred or violence.
Pray that churches will become places of peace, reconciliation, welcome and hope.
The protection strategy specifically calls us to pray for fear and hopelessness to be reduced and for the Church to stand united around the love of Jesus.
5. Pray for Those Being Drawn Towards Extremism
Our prayers should not only be about stopping attacks. We should pray upstream — for people before hatred becomes violence.
Pray for young people encountering extremist material online.
Pray for those who feel isolated, angry or without hope.
Pray that people being drawn towards violent ideologies will encounter relationships and voices that lead them in another direction.
Pray for families, teachers, youth workers, churches and community organisations to recognise vulnerability and respond wisely.
And above everything, pray for encounters with Jesus.
“He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” — Colossians 1:13
Our desire is not simply that potential perpetrators are stopped, but that lives are transformed.
6. Prayer Walk Your Community
One practical way of taking up the watchman role is prayer walking.
Walk through your neighbourhood and quietly pray God’s blessing over what you see.
When you pass a school, pray for the children and teachers.
When you pass a police station, pray for officers.
At a railway station or bus interchange, pray for protection over travellers.
When you pass a mosque, synagogue or church, pray for the safety of those gathering there.
At council buildings, pray for wisdom for local leaders.
In shopping areas, pray for businesses, workers, families and young people.
This transforms prayer from something that happens only inside church buildings into prayer in the places where people actually live their lives.
7. Pray for Spiritual Awakening Across the UK
There is an even greater prayer.
Protection matters, but ultimately Britain needs more than protection. We need spiritual awakening.
The protection strategy calls us to pray for an unprecedented move of God across our communities.
Imagine people turning from hatred to hope.
Imagine young people discovering purpose in Jesus rather than identity in extremist ideologies.
Imagine churches becoming houses of prayer for their neighbourhoods.
Imagine thousands encountering Jesus.
This is why watchmen do more than look for danger approaching the walls. We also look towards the horizon for what God wants to do.
A Simple Watchman Prayer Strategy
Churches, small groups and individuals can use this simple pattern:
WATCH — DISCERN — PRAY — BLESS
WATCH: What is happening in our community and nation?
DISCERN: Holy Spirit, what are You highlighting? How should we pray?
PRAY: Intercede specifically for people, places, leaders and situations.
BLESS: Speak God’s peace, mercy, protection and purposes over your community.
Do not allow unverified social-media claims or rumours to direct your prayers. Stay rooted in Scripture, use reliable information and allow the Holy Spirit — rather than fear — to shape your intercession.
Watchmen, Take Your Place
Perhaps this is a moment for Christians across the United Kingdom to take up their positions again.
Not watchmen motivated by fear.
Not watchmen looking for enemies.
But watchmen filled with faith, love, discernment and hope.
Watchmen praying over towns and cities.
Watchmen interceding for government and security services.
Watchmen covering schools and young people.
Watchmen blessing different communities.
Watchmen praying for plots to be exposed.
Watchmen asking for mercy.
And watchmen crying out for revival.
“Seek the peace and prosperity of the city… Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” — Jeremiah 29:7
The prayer strategy reminds us that our goal is mercy, protection, the preservation of life, the exposure of harmful plans, freedom from fear and a united Church centred on the love of Jesus.
A Prayer for the United Kingdom
Father, we lift the United Kingdom before You.
Have mercy upon our nation and place Your hand of protection over our towns, cities and communities.
Give wisdom and discernment to our government, police, intelligence services, Armed Forces and emergency services. Bring hidden plans into the light and frustrate every intention to cause violence and destruction.
Protect places where people gather and give particular protection to vulnerable communities.
Where there is hatred, release love. Where there is fear, release peace. Where there is division, bring reconciliation. Where people are being drawn towards darkness and violence, intervene and draw them towards truth, hope and life.
Awaken Your Church. Teach us to watch and pray. Give intercessors discernment without fear, authority without arrogance and compassion for every person.
We pray for our streets, schools, workplaces, transport networks and places of worship.
Let Your peace rest upon our communities.
And beyond protection, we ask for something greater: send spiritual awakening across the United Kingdom. Turn hearts towards Jesus and let the light of Christ shine into every community.
