GDOP VISION

The Global Day of Prayer vision is to call Christians from all denominations to unite for a day of repentance and prayer.

The vision, given to South African businessman Graham Powers, is based on 2 Chronicles 7:14 and began in Cape Town, South Africa in March 2001 where 45,000 people gathered for a day of prayer which saw lives and communities transformed.

In 2002, the vision spread to eight different venues in South Africa.  Across Africa, millions of Christians were inspired in transforming Africa and 27 African countries committed to a day of prayer and repentance in 2003.  In 2004, all 56 nations of Africa participated in the first continental Day of Prayer and an invitation went out to all the nations of the world to join in a five year Global Day of Prayer strategy up to 2010.

The threefold strategy consists of:

10 days of day-and-night prayer from Ascension day until Pentecost Sunday

1 Global Day of Prayer on Pentecost Sunday

90 days of blessings based around Acts 1 and 2.

On Pentecost Sunday 2005, 156 of the 220 nations of the world united for the first Global Day of Prayer.  The Global Day of Prayer has continued to grow since, with 199 participating in 2006, 204 nations in 2007, 214 nations in 2008. 2009 saw all 220 nations involving millions of Christians - possibly the biggest prayer meeting in the world EVER!

"For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters covers the sea"
Habakkuk 2:14
